Who doesn’t love pizza? It’s a relatively quick and easy meal option that tastes great and is widely-approved by adults and kids alike. As people with diabetes know too well though, eating pizza can prove to be a significant challenge to blood sugar management.
Enter Cali’flour Foods, a company that offers a variety of pizza crusts and flatbreads that are touted as “low-carb, gluten-free, grain-free, and guilt-free”, made from quality ingredients that arrive shelf-stable and should be frozen for longer shelf life.
I received pizza crust and flatbread samples from the company at no cost and all opinions in this review are my own.
I was impressed with the range of products, which include the traditional cauliflower crusts, the plant-based crusts, as well as an assortment of flatbreads, in a variety of flavors, from Plain to Italian, to Sweet Red Pepper, to Spicy Jalapeño.
I was very happy with the high-quality ingredients used, too.
Each serving, which is 1/3 of the crust, comes in at 1g net carbohydrate and 8g of protein.
The crusts were quick and easy to prepare according to the instructions, and I had a pizza ready to go within 20 minutes!
Most importantly, all the products tasted great! My husband who loves pizza, even remarked that it was good and was “much better than fathead pizza“.
One note is that the texture of these crusts tends to be a little more chewy as opposed to crispy. I didn’t mind this, but perhaps broiling the pizza a little longer may help mitigate this if one prefers a crispier finish.
Another very important concern of mine is always the effects of a particular food on my blood glucose levels. I am happy to report that I was easily and consistently able to consume several servings of the pizza with minimal and predictable amounts of insulin!
However, all good things come at a cost, and this one is no exception. Six pizza crusts will cost you no less than $38.85, and each one is not very large, so the price is definitely a consideration. However, between the great taste, convenience, and minimal effect on blood glucose levels, you may find it is well worth the investment!
