Zika Virus Disease in Var Department, France: Rapid Risk Assessment

Source: European Union, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Published: 10/16/2019.
This eight-page report discusses a case of locally acquired Zika virus (ZIKV) disease in France (Hy ères city, Var department). This risk assessment found that the probability of ongoing vector-borne local transmission in Hyères and surrounding areas is considered very low because current evidence does not indicate the existence of a more extensive cluster of Zika virus cases.

Zika virus (ZIKV) specific neutralizing antibodies hold great promise for antibody-based interventions and vaccine design against ZIKV infection. However, their development in infected patients remains unclear. Here, we applied next-generation sequencing (NGS) to probe the dynamic development of a potent and protective ZIKV E DIII-specific antibody ZK2B10 isolated from a ZIKV convalescent individual. The unbiased repertoire analysis showed dramatic changes in the usage of antibody variable region germline genes. However, lineage tracing of ZK2B10 revealed limited somatic hypermutation and transient expansion during the 12 …

In this study, full-term placentas from three women, each infected with ZIKV during specific pregnancy trimesters, were harvested for anatomic, immunologic and transcriptomic analysis. Each woman exhibited a unique immune response with raised IL-1RA, IP-10, EGF and RANTES expression, and neutrophil numbers during the acute infection phase. Although ZIKV NS3 antigens co-localized to placental Hofbauer cells, the placentas showed no anatomical defects. Transcriptomic analysis of samples from the placentas revealed that infection during trimester 1 caused a disparate cellular response centered on differential eIF2 signalling,…

The Zika virus (ZIKV) is a recently emerged mosquito-borne flavivirus that, while typically asymptomatic, can cause neurological symptoms in adults and birth defects in babies born to infected mothers. The interactions of ZIKV with many different pathways in the human host ultimately determine successful virus replication and ZIKV-induced pathogenesis; however, the molecular mechanisms of such host-ZIKV interactions have just begun to be elucidated. Here, we summarize the recent advances that defined the mechanisms by which ZIKV antagonizes antiviral innate immune signaling pathways, with a particular focus on evas…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the nutritional profile of newborns with microcephaly and factors associated with worse outcomes during the first 14 days of life. METHODS: This investigation is a longitudinal, descriptive study carried out in 21 full-term neonates exposed vertically to the Zika virus and hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit from February to September 2016. Patients receiving parenteral nutrition were excluded. Data analysis was performed using a generalized estimating equation model and Student ’ s t-test to evaluate the association between worsening weight-for-age z-scores and independent clinical,…

Flaviviruses comprise several medically important viruses, including Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, dengue virus (DENV), yellow fever virus and Zika virus (ZIKV). A large outbreak of DENV and ZIKV occurred recently, leading to many cases of illness and death. However, despite decades of efforts, we have no clinically specific therapeutic drugs against DENV and ZIKV. Previous studies showed that inflammatory responses play a critical role in dengue and Zika pathogenesis. Thus, in this study, we examined a series of novel anti-inflammatory compounds and found that treatment with compound 2d c…

Barbosa, Licarion Pinto, Mário César Ugulino de Araújo, Márcio José Coelho PontesABSTRACTAedes aegypti mosquitoes are vectors of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, zika and yellow fever. With the increase in the incidence of these diseases the population has resorted to the use of repellents searching to protect themselves from mosquito attack. The Brazilian market offers a wide variety of products with different active principles in varying levels of concentration, tim…
