If you’re reading this right now, then you may be concerned about your drinking. You’re likely at the point where you can’t make it through an entire day without taking a drink. Are you drinking at work or at school? Do you feel you’re no longer the person that you used to be, the person that you liked? Don’t give up. Today, you can attempt to begin the walk of sobriety. Please note that I said attempt because the sobriety walk isn’t an easy one. Heck, it isn’t even a walk; it’s more like a never ending trek up a mountain without a guide or ropes. Nevertheless, you can stop drinking. There are anchors on the ledges of that mountain that will support you when you can’t support yourself. Even though you don’t believe you are capable of ordering a Jack and coke without the Jack, you can if you really want to change your life for the better.
The first place to go is to your physician’s office. Sure this is a well-written article and everything, but you still need to be seen by a doctor you trust. Your physician will talk to you about the extent of your drinking and also give you a checkup to make sure that you’re well physically. Your doctor may refer you to an addictions counselor and suggest several support groups to you. With support from family and friends, a few people can stop drinking without medical assistance, but many require therapeutic help with the detoxification process and may need medications to help maintain sobriety.
If you are an alcoholic, once you stop drinking, your mind and your body will both go through withdrawal symptoms. You’re not going to be a happy camper initially; you may experience moods swings, chills, vomiting, and physical aches. After a period of time (and unfortunately that time will be longer than you prefer) you’ll begin to feel better mentally and physically.
As you know because you’ve probably tried to get sober before, getting sober is difficult, but it is worth it. Not only will you feel better mentally and physically, but you’ll also prevent and/or reduce medical conditions which can damage your body. Alcohol creates barriers between people, and once that wall is removed, your relationships at home and at work will grow stronger. Without alcohol, you’ll be capable of being the person you want to be. For an alcoholic, not drinking is a good thing.
