The island of Sylt is a German version of Nantucket, with windswept beaches, quaint lighthouses and a moneyed clientele.

Except when it comes to islanders’ attitude toward cranberries. While Nantucket, off the coast of Massachusetts, celebrates its cranberry harvest with an annual festival, Sylters look at the plants as hostile invaders. In the fall, volunteers work to get rid of them because they endanger native species.
