Camilla, the queen consort, is set to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday evening in televised comments praising the late monarch for carving her own role at a time when there were few examples of powerful women.
In a preview of her pre-recorded comments, which will air Sunday on the British Broadcasting Corp., the queen consort said it must have been difficult for the queen when she ascended to the throne in 1952.
“It must have been so difficult for her, being a solitary woman,” she said. “There weren’t women prime ministers or women presidents. She was the only one, so I think she carved her own role.”
She also recalled the queen’s “wonderful blue eyes,” which she said would “light up her whole face” when she smiled. “That smile is unforgettable,” she said.
King Charles III and Camilla married in a civil ceremony in 2005. Earlier this year, Queen Elizabeth II settled a question that had long hung over her succession by saying it was her “sincere wish that, when that time comes” her eldest son’s wife take the title queen consort. Queen consort refers to the spouse of a ruling king.
The U.K. will hold a one-minute moment of silence at 8p.m. Sunday to reflect on the queen’s legacy. The queen consort’s comments will be broadcast shortly before the moment of silence, according to the BBC.
