The United States is reportedly providing Ukraine with high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARM). In addition to a separate attack in the south, the missiles have been a key component in Ukraine’s dramatic attack in the Kharkiv area.
The AGM-88 HARM missile?
HARM is the abbreviation used for the AGM-88 HARM air-to-surface missile.It is a tool of war fired from fighter jets that possess the capability to monitor and aim radiation emitted by adversary radar systems with ground detection capabilities.
Although Raytheon Corporation, a prominent American defence contractor, currently manufactures the missile, it was initially designed by Texas Instruments, a Dallas-based corporation.
An extended edition of the missile is manufactured by Northrop Grumman, which has its base in Dulles, Virginia.
While being only 10 inches in diameter, the AGM-88 HARM is 14 metres long. It weighs approximately 360 kg and has a fragmentation-type explosive suited for radar locations. Additionally, it contains a solid-state digital CPU and an anti-radar homing seeker broadband RF transmitter and receiver. The missile can go more than 100 kilometres.
Russian speculations concerning AGM-88 HARM.
According to various reports, Russian Telegram users have recently been disseminating open-source information. That information states that a few AGM-88 HARM remains were discovered close to a Russian surface-to-air missile installation.
The remains displayed authentic serial numbers that might be linked to AGM-88 HARM, according to analysts of open-source intelligence. Additionally, the US supports these inferences.
The Indian Express reports that over the past few days, Russian social media users have been disseminating unofficial information on Telegram about the discovery of AGM-88 HARM remnants close to a Russian surface-to-air missile installation. Open-source intelligence specialists correlated the AGM-88 HARM to the images of the missile’s purported remains since they appeared to show legitimate registration numbers.
The US government has now validated these deductions.
Ukraine’s platform to use AGM-88 HARM
This problem has been studied by analysts who evaluate the military. It would seem that only Western armed forces possess the necessary fighter aircraft for the use of these missiles and that Ukraine’s fleet of Russian-origin aircraft cannot be equipped with the AGM-88 HARM and utilised as such. AGM-88 HARM warheads can be launched from NATO aircraft in Europe, including the Tornado ECR, F-16CM Block 50, and F/A-18-EA-18G.
According to a CNN report, the Russia-Ukraine conflict was the first time the weapon has been employed by a military other than the US. Its effectiveness is still being debated given the understocked state of the Ukrainian Air Force’s fleet.
According to the same CNN report, there is concern that the weapons could have been launched by NATO aircraft secretly backing the Ukrainian forces in combat as Ukraine does not possess warplanes that are recognized to be suitable for the missile.
A look back at previous air defence tactics
Batteries of heavy anti-aircraft weapons were used to combat bombers during World War II, but as soon as jet bombers were capable of flying faster and higher, this weaponry was no longer viable. The most recent version of these air-to-surface missiles, called harm, has a range of about 90 miles (145 km), weighs about 350 kg, and is capable of finding and attacking radar systems even while they are off.
